The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have awarded £800k+ funding to a new project entitled 'INTUIT: Interaction Design for Trusted Sharing of Personal Health Data to Live Well with HIV' project (EP/R033900/1), to start in November 2018: www.intuitproject.org.

This design-led programme of research will develop and evaluate trusted systems that empower the ownership of self-generated data for managing how to live and age well with HIV as a long-term condition that remains socially stigmatised. The research is fundamentally co-created with non-academic partners, including patients, clinicians, charities, advocacy groups, and commercial enterprises, and will deliver transferable insight that addresses significant social challenges for self-managing HIV plus other long term conditions.

Please find the press release from the ESPRC here: https://epsrc.ukri.org/newsevents/news/tipsresearchprojects/.

The interdisciplinary project, engaging partners in Medicine (UCL), Social Computing (City), Applied Ethics (Edinburgh), Computer Science (Bristol), and Psychology (Northumbria), will be led by Northumbria School of Design, which I feel is significant for showing the potential of Design to drive research.

In other news, I presented a research-through-design project at the ACM CHI 2018 Conference, which took place in Montréal 21-26 April. The paper was entitled: 'Admixed Portrait: Design to Understand Facebook Portrayals in New Parenthood', available to download through the ACM Digital Library: https://doi.org/10.1145/3173574.3173586.

The study explored how Facebook photos represented mothers, fathers, and 'new arrivals' during the major life transition of becoming a parent for the first time.  At the conference we presented new evidence to inform the design of online interfaces to social media that afford reciprocal awareness for supporting online self-expression and digital literacy.
